About Jake’s Jolly Jigsaws

Hi, I am Jake, and I created Jake’s Jolly Jigsaws in 2024. I started Jake’s Jolly Jigsaws because I have a passion for woodwork, and enjoy making puzzles simply by hand. (To find out more about me, click here). All puzzles made by Jake’s Jolly Jigsaws are made by me, with no printing, laser cutting or pre made items. All I use is a sheet of 3mm wood, my trusty fretsaw, a rotary tool station from Ozito Power Xchange, and some markers and varnish. (To find out more about how I make my puzzles, click here). Because of this, my puzzles are always unique, authentic and an amazing birthday gift for children. I love making jigsaws, and I am passionate about quality. I spend a lot of time on my orders, and I love making all of them. Woodwork relaxes me, and I just love that I know that I will be making someone happy with this puzzle. This business is so much fun, I love doing it, and of course I could not have started it without my awesome parents. They gave me this website as a birthday present, and I must say that a lot of my other tools and supplies also came as presents. Not to mention their ongoing support and help with each puzzle.

Jigsaws!

Jigsaw puzzles are great because you can have endless fun problem solving and it feels so good when you do get it done. They are perfect for all ages because of the range of pieces for each age group. They get even better if you can personalize them according to your interests, passions and hobbies. Or they make a really nice gift if you can write down the name of the lucky child you would like to surprise.

Tools

Jake uses a variety of tools to create the perfect puzzle. For the sawing, a fretsaw from Kids At Work, for the drilling and sanding, a rotary tool station or Dremel from Ozito XCHANGE, for the drawing and painting, markers from Faber Castell, as well as permanent markers and paint from Kmart. He also uses clamps from the Dutch woodwork company GAMMA, spray on varnish from Dulux, wood glue from Selleys, bags from value craft, wood from passtime crafts and project panels, safety glasses from Duramax, saw blades from Pegas, available at Carbatec, and drill bits from FERREX.

Making a puzzle

When I first get a puzzle order, I always start by reading through what the customer has ordered. Then, I find inspiration on images or designs that fit that description and create my own design. Once I know what this design looks like, I start making the puzzle. This means getting my sheet of wood, measuring the correct size of wood that would fit the design I created before, and then carefully sawing out each piece. Next, I create the base of the puzzle, which I make the same size as the top of the puzzle as I want them to fit nicely. I sand all the pieces to make sure they fit well together. The base is glued on and then I start drawing on the design. I print out my design, put the sheet of paper on top of my puzzle, and use a pen to trace along the important outlines of my design. This allows the imortant parts of the design to be imprinted on the wood slightly, so that I can create a nice, neat design every time. I then use either a black pen or permanent marker, depending on the effect I want the puzzle design to have, to trace along these indents so that a rough scetch of my design is visible on the wood. I use permanent markers to colour in my design on the wood to make sure that the outcome is bold and colourful. Finally, I varnish my puzzle, so that the colours don’t smudge and the puzzle is safe for use. I wrap my puzzles and they are delivered to their orderers by Australia Post. With every puzzle, I put in immense care, time and effort to make sure that each puzzle is the present that the customer has been looking forward to.

About Jake

Hi! I am Jake, and I am 13 years old and one of four. I was born in the Netherlands but moved with my family to Australia in 2017. I have lived in Brisbane for almost 3 years now (I came from Melbourne) and I love it! I love space. I enjoy learning about the new space missions and mysterious new scientific discoveries, particularly about black holes. I like how space is so immensely big and how gravity and the other forces work. I also enjoy maths, I enjoy how structured it is, with the rules that are always followed and that there is only one correct answer. I love sport just as much. I am a state level swimmer, my favourite event is the 200m butterfly, and a national level cross country runner. I love running in general, and the further, the better! I have ran multiple half marathons, and my 10 km PB is 37.10. (I ran that at the brisbane marathon, the year after the photo to the left was taken).

I became interested in woodwork one Christmas in 2022 when I was visiting family in the Netherlands and the place were we stayed had a craft zone where you could borrow tools and buy a plank of wood. I got to work and created my first puzzle. Ever since I have enjoyed creating puzzles for my siblings and this year I began to see potential in my hobby and started up Jake’s Jolly Jigsaws!

I really liked the speed and friendliness of this company. I asked for a surprise puzzle design that was Harry Potter themed, and boy did Jake’s Jolly Jigsaws deliver well! Better then I hoped for. The intricate detail was also something to marvel at. Thanks J3 for this puzzle and giving me hours of joy!

The owner [of Jake’s Jolly Jigsaws] – my friend – great guy. [My puzzle that I ordered was] better than a manufactured puzzle.

Jake, in addition to making wonderful jigsaw puzzles, is a master craftsman of possum boxes! Upon hearing of our unwelcome possum guests, he built them a fantastic sturdy alternative home. The possum box (installed within Council requirements) is built to last, and is now mercifully THE place to be for possum hangouts!

Jake delivered 3 amazing puzzles for 3 different aged kids. The quality is awesome and has stood up to the abuse of 4, 7 and 9 year old kids.
